Background: Sasuke is the only survivor of the massacre of the Uchiha clan, which got eliminated by none other than his own brother, Uchiha Itachi. At the age of 7 he had to witness how his brother killed his parents, as well as the entire clan, and only spared him because "he wasn't even worth killing". Itachi then told him to find out about the real Sharingan purpose, and that if he wants to kill him, he should hate and detest him and survive in an unsightly way.. Sasuke had taken those words to heart and only clinged to one thought - revenge.
Since that fateful day, Sasuke worked even harder than before and continued to be on top of the class. Once he graduated as the number one rookie in the academy, he got more or less forced on a team consisting of Uzumaki Naruto, Haruno Sakura and their teacher, Hatake Kakashi - Team Seven. At first Sasuke didn't care at all for his teammates and only saw them as a burden, but this soon had changed. Naruto and Sakura were the reason Sasuke finally could push the thoughts of revenge aback and learnt instead the value of team work.
However, as we know, this didn't hold for too long. Sasuke got pulled back into his past again, and his desire to gain power no matter how, was stronger than ever before. Thus he made a decision - he was willing to leave everything behind and forget or better said, cut the very bonds he had carefully formed until then. At that day, he had left for Orochimaru's place, in order to become stronger. He didn't even care anymore if he got killed there or not (or so he said), as long as he was able to fulfil his purpose in life before that. Unfortunately, as we know, not even Naruto, nor Sakura could stop him at that point of time..
