entwined - the meaning of teamwork
Kakashi's "survival" test followed swiftly - and the first thing which was clearly shown was the completely different approach and method of reaching an aim between the 2 boys. Sasuke as well as Naruto are both extremely
hardworking and ambitious, but each of them has got his own way of tackling a problem. While Sasuke does everything single-handedly and in secret (like a ninja should) Naruto doesn't care for all the standard Shinobi rules, which first of all consist of hiding and attacking out of nowhere. So, hottempered as he is, Naruto went directly at Kakashi without a second thought.
Sasuke calmly observed from nearby, waiting for an insecure spot of their teacher, and as soon as he had thought he he'd found one, he didn't hesitate to use all measures in his reach to take the "opponent" down.

Unfortunately both of their attempts were in vain- one ended up being caught in a trap, while the other one was stuck in earth. Even so, this pointed out again how different those two characters are and also their actions. Although, neither of them is the type of giving up fast, and both easily get heaten up during battle.
|
Moreover what they both completely ignored at that time, was that they were a Team, together with Sakura. They only saw the target right in front of their eyes and nothing else -
both acted on their own without thinking about the other one.
|
However, this should be the first and last time they didn't try to help each other and go together for an aim. When Kakashi told them to quit being ninjas, because team work is extremely important as a ninja, followed by a more or less "test" if they had understood the principle (iE not giving Naruto any food), it was Sasuke who broke the silence and offered Naruto his food.

Kakashi, Chapter 8
How very true. I myself found that scenes very nice as a start for a wonderful team spirit as the one of Team Seven. Especially Naruto and Sasuke had to overcome their pride and egoism, but as soon as they had, it was just the beginning of an unbeatable duo, Sasuke and Naruto that is. Moreover the above posted quote, which originally came from Uchiha Obito, should prove its truth several times later in the series, and I'm quite sure both boys got the concept of team work at that early point of time already.
